Why “Blue Atoll”?

I’ve meant to write this post for a long, long time; a combination of overwhelming work at my day time job and lethargy everywhere else kept pushing this lower and lower among my list of to-dos and priorities. This Sunday, however, my house has been quiet, my beagle, Sushi, is snoring by my feet, everybody else is sleeping in their bedrooms and there’s a giant cup of tea on my worktable by my side.

Several people have asked me about “Blue Atoll” – what does it mean? Why did I choose that name? What is its significance? What do we do? What does the logo mean? Well, here goes:

What does it mean?

Blue Atoll

Blue Atoll

An atoll is a coral island (or islands) that encircles a lagoon partially or completely. Atolls around the world are homes to some of the most beautiful marine life on the planet, and are featured in idyllic scenes of beaches and getaways. Think “The Blue Lagoon” and “The Beach“, both movies with atolls and lagoons. Throughout the world, the best atolls are colored with brilliant shades of blue, aquamarine and turquoise.

Why did I choose that name?

A couple of years ago, I went to the Maldives on a holiday, and stayed at one of the most beautiful places in the world. For those who haven’t been there, the Maldives is island nation in the Indian Ocean formed by a double chain of twenty-six atolls oriented north-south off India’s Lakshadweep islands, between Minicoy Island and Chagos Archipelago. It stands in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometers south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometres (250 mi) south-west of India. This chain of islands is an archipelago located among the Lakshadweep-Maldives-Chagos Group, which are the tops of a vast undersea mountain range in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The atolls of the Maldives encompass a territory spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometers, making it one of the world’s most dispersed countries in geographic terms.

I immediately fell in love with the place – its serenity, its cleanliness, the friendliness of its people, the mind-blowing beauty and the crystal clear, warm waters.

I also immediately knew that I wanted to live – retire, settle down, move to – call it whatever you want – there or in a place just like it.

Hence the name, Blue Atoll.

What is its significance?

In a way, my company exemplifies the blue atolls of the Maldives – calmness, clarity, honesty and friendliness. It signifies a passion for creating awe-inspiring products the and the will to preserve and improve upon their beauty.

What do we do?

We create software products, both commercial off the shelf, and customized. Our products are driven by passion, quality and beauty (I’m a rabid fan of Apple’s iPhone and iPad).

What does the logo mean?

The logo (and its variants) is a blue atoll – three rings of blue corals. Each ring signifies one of our values.

  • The innermost, which is often the most gorgeous part of an atoll, stands for beauty.
  • The second ring, which is often a stronger, darker ring of coral, signifies passion.
  • The third ring, which is often coral in deeper waters and coral, signifies depth and understanding.

There you have it; the substance of Blue Atoll – everything that we stand for and believe in.
